AAP Accuses BJP of Systematically Eliminating Slums in Delhi
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi Marlena has accused the BJP-led Union Government of orchestrating the systematic removal of slums in Delhi. In a press conference, she alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advisor, Tarun Kapoor, recently convened a meeting with various land-owning agencies, instructing them to eliminate all slums in the national capital.
Marlena claimed that the removal of slums on Central Government-owned land has been ongoing for months. She highlighted the demolition of Sunder nursery slums in Mathura during the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in November, attributing it to the Central Government’s directives.
The AAP leader also criticized the BJP for covering slum areas with green sheets during the G20 summit and US President Joe Biden’s visit to India. Marlena asserted that PM Modi aims to eliminate slums entirely from Delhi.
Backing Atishi’s statement, Delhi minister Saurabh Bhardwaj emphasized the social reality of slums and stressed the government’s responsibility to rehabilitate residents if any slum is demolished. He referred to Supreme Court orders in April 2020, directing the Central Government to rehabilitate people affected by the demolition of Sarojini Nagar slums. Bhardwaj accused the BJP of demolishing slums despite the Deputy Chief Minister’s orders.
This accusation follows earlier protests by AAP workers in January 2023, post-Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, against the Centre’s slum demolitions. At the time, AAP MLA Atishi criticized the BJP for breaking promises made before elections and accused them of bulldozing slums. The ongoing dispute reflects tensions between the AAP-led Delhi government and the BJP over slum removal policies.
