National Immigrants Rights Group Reacts to Birthright Citizenship Being Upheld by the United States Supreme Court
(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – Today, the United States Supreme Court issued its ruling in Trump v. Barbara, protecting the 14th Amendment and affirming the basic principle that the President can’t rewrite the Constitution with the stroke of a pen. In 2025, President Trump signed an executive order that sought to strip certain babies born in the United States of their U.S. citizenship, raising alarms and fears for families that the government would effectively create second-class citizens and chaos across the country.
A pro-immigrant and pro-working-class organization, Make the Road States has over 70,000 members across Connecticut, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Abby, a member of Make the Road New York, shared the following reaction:
“Last year, I was pregnant when Trump signed an executive order attempting to take away birthright citizenship. Birthright citizenship is a fundamental right of every child born in this country. Every day since that executive order was signed until the day I gave birth, I wondered if my newborn would be considered a U.S. citizen or what would happen to him. What would his birth certificate say? What country would he belong to? My three children, from my oldest to my youngest, are U.S.-born and U.S. citizens. This country is my home and the home of my children.”

Below, leaders from each state also shared their reaction to today’s victory:
Theo Oshiro, Co-Executive Director of Make the Road States, added: “Birthright citizenship has allowed generations of Americans – from every wave of immigration – to grow up, contribute, and strengthen our communities. Ultimately, this administration’s attempt to further cast out immigrants failed and served as only a distraction from the affordability crisis communities across the country are experiencing. Make the Road States will continue to fight for our immigrant communities and ensure that they receive the dignity and respect we all deserve.”
Wendy Cardenas, Make the Road Connecticut State Director, stated: “Today, we welcome the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the 14th Amendment and reject yet another attack on immigrant families and the Constitution. No one should have to prove they belong in the country where they were born. This attempt to end birthright citizenship created unnecessary fear and uncertainty for families across Connecticut and the nation while threatening a fundamental promise of our democracy. Immigrants are workers, entrepreneurs, caregivers, taxpayers, and community members who strengthen our country every day. While we celebrate this victory, our work is far from over. We will continue fighting to ensure every immigrant family is treated with the dignity, respect, and opportunity they deserve.”
Patty Torres, Co-Executive Director of Make the Road Pennsylvania, said, “Today, the Supreme Court reaffirmed what should never have been in question: those born in the United States are U.S. citizens. Attacking immigrants, turning people against each other, and forcing families into the shadows isn’t about border security– it’s about consolidating power. When we’re made to fear one another, it’s easier to ignore the real culprits: the wealthy and powerful who are profiting off private prisons and detention centers, driving up rent, cutting wages, and exploiting our labor. We remain committed to building a country where everyone is given respect, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive.”
Nedia Morsy, Executive Director for Make the Road New Jersey, added: “While we celebrate today’s victory, we know the fight for dignity and belonging is far from over. The same communities that fought to defend birthright citizenship are still facing attacks on their rights, their families, and their ability to live without fear. In New Jersey, immigrant communities are workers, neighbors, small business owners, caregivers, and leaders who make our state stronger every day. Make the Road New Jersey will continue organizing alongside our communities to defend the Constitution, protect immigrant families, and build a future where everyone is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
Blanca Macias, Executive Director of Make the Road Nevada, issued the following statement:
“Today, we celebrate the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold birthright citizenship and reaffirm a fundamental promise of our Constitution. This ruling brings relief to families across Nevada who have spent months living with unnecessary fear and uncertainty about their future and the future of their children. While we celebrate today’s victory, tomorrow we continue the work of ensuring every family can live with dignity, security, and opportunity—because every child born in the United States deserves to grow up knowing exactly where they belong.”
