    BEIJING, MAY 24, 2026 [VoM News]: China, which is one of the world’s largest coal consumers, witnessed a massive gas explosion in the country’s northern Shanxi province.

    The deadly blast occurred on Friday evening at the Liushenyu coal mine while hundreds of miners were underground.

    At least 90 people were killed, according to state media, marking the country’s biggest mining disaster in 17 years.

    Reports said that at the time of the blast, around 247 workers were underground, out of which 90 were confirmed dead.

    In 2009, 108 people were killed in a mine blast in northeast Heilongjiang province, marking one of the deadliest mining disasters.

    Xinhua reported that President Xi Jinping urged efforts to treat the injured and called for a thorough investigation into the incident, along with measures to ensure workplace safety.
