US to Delay Arms Deliveries to Europe Amid Strain from Iran War: Report

US to Delay Arms Deliveries to Europe Amid Strain from Iran War: Report

Washington, Apr 14 (VoM News): The United States has informed several European allies that deliveries of previously contracted weapons are likely to be delayed as the ongoing conflict with Iran continues to strain its military stockpiles, according to a Reuters report citing multiple sources.

The delays are expected to affect a number of countries, particularly in the Baltic region and Scandinavia, some of which share sensitive borders with Russia.

The weapons were procured under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme, which allows nations to purchase US-made defence equipment with Washington’s approval and logistical support. However, several of these systems are yet to be delivered and are now facing further delays following recent communications from US officials.

The White House and the State Department declined to comment on the matter, referring queries to the Pentagon, which has not issued a response so far.

The development highlights mounting pressure on US military resources since the conflict began on February 28 with US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran. European officials have expressed concern, saying the delays are complicating their defence preparedness, particularly amid ongoing security challenges linked to Russia.

Frustration is also growing in European capitals over repeated setbacks in delivery timelines, prompting some countries to consider alternative or domestically produced defence systems.

US officials, however, have maintained that the weapons are urgently required for operations in the Middle East and have criticised European allies for not doing enough to assist in securing the Strait of Hormuz.

The strain on American stockpiles has been further intensified by earlier commitments, including military aid to Ukraine following the 2022 conflict and continued support to Israel during its operations in Gaza.

According to the report, the delayed shipments mainly include various types of ammunition used for both offensive and defensive purposes, underlining the broader pressure on global military supply chains.
