Donald Trump Announces 10 Day Israel Lebanon Ceasefire, Calls It “Historic Step”
Washington, Apr 17 (VoM News): Donald Trump has announced a 10 day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, claiming it as a major diplomatic breakthrough amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Trump said the ceasefire will come into effect at 5 pm EST, following what he described as “excellent” conversations with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He further claimed that this would mark the “10th war” he has helped stop globally, expressing confidence that the agreement could pave the way for lasting peace between the two countries.
According to Trump, Israel and Lebanon recently held direct talks in Washington for the first time in decades, signaling a rare diplomatic engagement after prolonged hostilities.
The US President said he has directed Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and senior military officials to ensure progress towards a long term peace agreement.
The ceasefire follows weeks of intense conflict that began after hostilities involving Iran and later spread to Lebanon through the Iran backed Hezbollah group. The fighting has resulted in heavy casualties and large scale displacement, particularly in southern Lebanon.
While the truce has been welcomed by many in Lebanon, reactions remain mixed. A Hezbollah lawmaker criticised the government’s decision to engage in direct negotiations, calling it a “grave error” and opposing concessions to the US and Israel.
Despite the ceasefire announcement, Israeli strikes and cross border tensions continued until shortly before the truce took effect, highlighting the fragile nature of the agreement.
Netanyahu described the ceasefire as an opportunity for a broader peace deal but reiterated that disarmament of Hezbollah remains a key condition for any long term settlement.
The development comes as the United States continues parallel efforts to negotiate a wider agreement with Iran, with Trump indicating that a deal may be close.
Officials say the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the ceasefire holds and leads to sustained peace in the region.
