    Jammu Kashmir: Cloudburst Hits Chatroo in Kishtwar; NH-244 Closed as Precaution

    Kishtwar, Aug. 1, 2026 [VoM News]: A cloudburst struck the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district on Saturday amid heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir, causing damage to property and disrupting normal life.

    According to reports, the cloudburst triggered a heavy flow of mud and debris, blocking parts of the area and damaging several structures. However, no casualties had been reported till the filing of this report.

    As a precautionary measure, authorities have closed the NH-244 in view of the prevailing weather conditions and the risk posed by landslides and debris.

    SHO Chatroo, accompanied by officials from the civil administration and other departments, reached the affected area to assess the damage and oversee relief measures.

    Meanwhile, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh said the government remains committed to providing compensation to those whose properties have been damaged in the incident.

    In a post on X, the minister also highlighted that following the Chasoti cloudburst, the Ministry of Earth Sciences has installed two advanced Early Warning Systems (EWS) in Kishtwar and Machhail to improve disaster preparedness.

    He further said that an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) is also being installed in the Padder area of Kishtwar district to strengthen weather monitoring and early warning capabilities.
