Why Delhi Capitals Skipper Did Not Go to Auqib Nabi in Death Overs, Even Though Economical?
A high-scoring encounter was witnessed between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League, at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday, where CSK seals a commanding 23-run victory over opponents.
Sanju Samson stole the show with a stunning century, but what was also witnessed was the spell of Auqib Nabi—the youngest bowler from Jammu and Kashmir making his debut—who conceded 17 runs in 2 overs, with a wicket.
Despite an economical bowling spell, the crunch moments of the death overs witnessed a shock point, where a field decision was made not to give the ball to Auqib Nabi, and instead, he was not utilised in the crucial closing stages of the match.
Sanju Samson took the Delhi Capitals bowling attack on, while Auqib Nabi was having a fine spell with a wicket as well. That’s where the question arises on the on-field decision of captain Axar Patel, who preferred himself despite struggling to contain the flow of runs, conceding heavily during the death overs.
As there were reports of prompting calls from observers, and even suggestions on the field to bring him back into the attack, however, the team management decided not to bring him in. That also proved costly, as the match slipped away in the final overs.
This stirred a debate among fans and supporters as to why the young bowler was not backed, even after having an economical spell. Fans are questioning skipper Axar Patel for denying him the key opportunity to prove himself under pressure in crunch moments.
Fans are hopeful that Auqib Nabi will be given a full-fledged opportunity to prove himself in upcoming fixtures.
