Efficient Digital Services Garner Global Praise
India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) has garnered international acclaim for its transformative impact, with the World Bank recognizing India’s impressive strides in the realm of digital governance. Ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India is advocating for DPI to be a major focal point on the global stage. DPI comprises essential digital services and technologies that facilitate economic opportunities and social services delivery in a secure and efficient manner.
World Bank’s Commendation
The World Bank document commends India’s DPI approach, acknowledging that India has accomplished in a mere six years what would typically take five decades. The report highlights India’s achievement in building one of the world’s largest digital Government-To-Person (G2P) architectures through DPI. Over the past decade, this architecture has facilitated transfers totaling approximately $361 billion to beneficiaries across 53 central government ministries through 312 key schemes. This impressive feat has resulted in cumulative savings of $33 billion, equivalent to nearly 1.14 percent of India’s GDP, as of March 2022.
Digital Transformation in Action
May 2023 witnessed over 9.41 billion UPI transactions with a total value of approximately Rs 14.89 trillion. Notably, the total value of UPI transactions for the fiscal year 2022-23 neared 50 percent of India’s nominal GDP. This remarkable digital transformation underscores India’s commitment to harnessing technology to enhance governance and improve the lives of its citizens.
The G20’s India Agenda
The G20 Leaders’ Summit is scheduled to take place in New Delhi from September 9-10, with participation from over 30 heads of state and government, as well as top officials from the European Union and invited guest nations. Fourteen heads of international organizations are also expected to attend. India’s Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, emphasized the government’s concerted efforts to integrate technology into governance since 2014. He reiterated the commitment to extend digital infrastructure connectivity to all public services.
India’s Diplomatic Role
India’s G20 presidency has placed DPI at the forefront of discussions, attracting the attention of global leaders. The nation has leveraged technology, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to revolutionize governance, democracy, and the well-being of its citizens. Additionally, India is advocating for the interests of the Global South at the G20 Summit, advocating for increased representation of developing countries in the G20 process and proposing the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member.
PM Modi’s Advocacy for African Union
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a vocal proponent of granting the African Union full membership in the G20. He penned a letter to the leaders of G20 nations, urging them to endorse the African Union’s full membership. This proposal has been formally included in the draft communique for the G20 Summit, reflecting India’s dedication to fostering equitable global partnerships.
