Terrorists Linked to Banned Groups Allegedly Fire at Army Officer in Manipur, Sparking Security Concerns.
Terrorists Infiltrating Protests in Manipur
Terrorists belonging to banned groups United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and People’s Liberation Army (PLA) were allegedly part of the mob from which gunshots were fired at an army officer, leaving him severely injured in Manipur. This incident has raised concerns about terrorists mingling with crowds during protests in the region.
Injured Lt Colonel Airlifted for Treatment
After the Lt Colonel of the army, Lt Col Raman Tyagi, was injured during a standoff with a group of people, he had to be airlifted from Manipur to Guwahati, where he underwent surgery. This incident triggered a crackdown on protesters attempting to march towards a tribal village.
Resurgence of Banned Groups in Manipur
Security agencies have been warning about the resurgence of near-dormant banned groups such as UNLF, PLA, Kanglei Yawol Kanba Lup (KYKL), and People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) in the state. These groups have witnessed increasing support from the majority community, with concerns of arms and ammunition being looted from the Manipur police armor.
Banned Groups’ Activities and Funding Sources
UNLF has been involved in extortion, targeting contractors and businessmen. PLA aims to liberate Manipur and establish an independent Meitei land in Imphal Valley. KYKL, considered a mercenary group, supports other terror groups and is comprised mainly of criminals and drug addicts. PREPAK, banned for its secessionist ideology, relies on extortion, mainly from pharmacies, and is involved in drug trafficking and smuggling.
