CJI Surya Kant to Inaugurate Permanent J&k and Ladakh High Court Bench in Leh
LEH, October 18, 2026, [VoM News]: Marking a major global expansion of the judicial access in the Union Territory of Ladakh, Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant will inaugurate the permanent bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in Leh on Sunday.
On this precious occasion, the Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena will also grace the inauguration by his presence.
Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra said the permanent bench would particularly benefit residents of remote and far-flung areas who have faced difficulties accessing higher judicial institutions because of geographical constraints, harsh weather and long travel distances.
By this achievement, the residents who seek the judicial relief, now through writ petitions, will now be able to approach the High Court bench in Leh instead of travelling to Srinagar or Jammu, he said.
Kundra further added that the initiative had taken shape within about two months.
He added that the issue was undertaken by the Government of India in recognition of Ladakh’s difficult terrain and the need to bring judicial services closer to residents.
