Islamabad: In a recent development, the Official Secrets Act Special Court has granted permission to former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to communicate with his sons via phone until September 15, according to a report by The News International.
Long-standing Demand for Communication with Loved Ones.
Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had persistently requested the opportunity to converse with both his legal counsel and his sons. However, his appeals seemed to fall on deaf ears for an extended period.
Court’s Order Frustrated by Jail Authorities.
Sheeraz Ahmed Ranjha, one of Imran Khan’s lawyers, revealed that despite the court’s explicit directive to the jail officials, they had been reluctant to facilitate telephonic conversations between Khan and his sons. This revelation came to light via ARY News, which reported on the matter.
Legal Hurdles in Meeting Imran Khan.
Adding to the complications, Imran Khan’s legal team also encountered resistance from the police when they attempted to meet their client at the Attock Jail.
Judge Seeks Report on Order Compliance.
Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain has now taken action by issuing a notice to Attock Jail Superintendent Arif Shehzad, requesting a comprehensive report on the adherence to the court’s order. This move was reported by The News International.
Imran Khan’s Stand Against Jail Authorities
Notably, PTI Chairman Khan has escalated the matter by approaching the special court to file a complaint against the jail superintendent for his non-compliance with the court’s directive, which instructed the establishment of suitable arrangements for telephonic conversations with his sons, as reported by The News International.
The Toshakhana Controversy
The Toshakhana case has been a pivotal issue in Pakistan’s political landscape, particularly after the Election Commission of Pakistan disqualified Imran Khan for providing “false statements and incorrect declarations,” as revealed by ARY News. The case revolves around allegations that Khan failed to disclose details about the gifts he retained from Toshakhana during his tenure as Pakistan’s Prime Minister.
Temporary Relief Amidst Legal Battles
Subsequently, the Islamabad Court temporarily suspended Imran Khan’s conviction and ordered his release on bail from Attock Jail. Nevertheless, the special court insisted on keeping him in judicial remand in the cypher case.
Cypher Case Relocated to Attock Jail
The hearing for the cypher case against the PTI chief was relocated to Attock Jail, as approved by the law ministry, marking another twist in this ongoing legal saga.
Bushra Bibi Summoned by NAB
Furthermore, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) recently summoned former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, in connection with the Toshakhana case.
Accusations Against Bushra Bibi
Bushra Bibi is facing allegations of retaining various items from the Toshakhana, including a locket, chain, earrings, two rings, and a bracelet. Additionally, she stands accused of keeping gold and diamond necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, and more. NAB contends that these gifts were not properly submitted to the Toshakhana for valuation.
