Kerala Consumer Court Orders Indian Railways to Compensate Passenger for 13-Hour Train Delay

A consumer court in Kerala has directed the Indian Railways to compensate a passenger with ₹60,000 for causing him inconvenience, mental agony, and financial hardship due to the delay of a train by over 13 hours. The Ernakulam District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission made the ruling on October 18 in response to a complaint filed by Karthik Mohan, who was traveling from Ernakulam to Chennai on the Alappuzha-Chennai Express.

The complainant had booked the train ticket to attend an important meeting in Chennai but suffered significant inconvenience due to the delay. The Railways argued that the delay was due to reconstruction work, and they had sent SMS notifications to passengers about the delay and offered refunds and alternate transport options. However, the consumer court ruled in favor of the complainant, emphasizing the importance of timely and efficient service for a major public sector undertaking like the Indian Railways.
