Justin Trudeau Remains in India as Backup Plane is Dispatched Due to Aircraft Issues.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his country’s delegation are facing an unexpected delay in their visit to India due to a plane breakdown. As a result, a backup plane and spare parts are currently en route to India to resolve the situation.Trudeau will have to make a decision whether to return to Canada using the backup plane or wait for the original aircraft to be repaired. However, details about the specific components needing replacement remain undisclosed, according to an unnamed government official who spoke to Bloomberg.
Despite the unforeseen plane trouble, Trudeau’s office released a statement assuring that the Canadian Armed Forces are making every effort to ensure the safe return of the Canadian delegation. The earliest possible departure is currently anticipated for Tuesday late afternoon, though the situation remains fluid.
This plane mishap is the latest challenge in Trudeau’s history of travels to India. His first trip in 2018 was marred by a diplomatic disaster when it was revealed that a convicted individual, who had attempted to assassinate an Indian politician on Canadian soil, was included in Canada’s guest list for an event.
Additionally, even before the plane breakdown, Trudeau faced public criticism from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who accused Canada of tolerating “anti-India activities of extremist elements.” This accusation was directed at Sikh groups advocating for an independent homeland known as Khalistan.
Trudeau and Modi did not engage in a formal bilateral meeting at the summit. However, they had a brief conversation on the sidelines, during which they discussed foreign interference and the importance of respecting the rule of law.
Back in Canada, Trudeau’s travel delays have prompted discussions about the deteriorating state of the country’s infrastructure. The Airbus A310s, which transport Trudeau and other top officials on international trips, date back to the 1980s and are showing signs of aging. These aircraft often require refueling stops during long-haul journeys to Asia, leading to stopovers in places like Alaska and Japan before reaching their final destinations.
Efforts are underway to replace Canada’s aging government transport fleet with Airbus 330s, although these newer planes are still undergoing retrofitting for operational use.Meanwhile, Trudeau’s official residence, located at 24 Sussex Drive in Ottawa, remains in a state of disrepair. The residence has faced issues such as asbestos, faulty wiring, drafty windows, and substandard security measures. Surprisingly, Trudeau and his family have never lived there since his election in 2015. The reluctance of successive prime ministers to allocate public funds for its restoration has contributed to the residence’s deterioration.
