Doda Police Rescue 8 from Chenab in Midnight Operation, Warn Public of Strict Action for Violations
Doda, Aug 31: In a dramatic overnight operation, Doda Police, assisted by SDRF personnel and the Army, rescued eight individuals who were left stranded in the middle of the Chenab river at Karmail, Assar, after their temporary wooden raft got stuck among drifting timber.
Officials said the distress call was received at Police Station Assar close to midnight, alerting authorities about several persons trapped in the fast-flowing river. Responding immediately, police Quick Reaction Teams along with SDRF teams rushed to the site with rescue gear, while the Army’s 48 RR unit also joined the mission.

The operation was particularly challenging as thick fog over the river hampered visibility. Using high-powered lights and constant coordination, rescuers managed to guide the stranded men towards the forested stretch along the bank, eventually bringing them to safety after nearly three hours of effort.
The rescue was closely monitored by SSP Doda Sandeep Mehta, JKPS, and carried out under the supervision of DySP DAR/SDRF Adil Rishu with SHO Assar Inspector Rakesh Bandral on ground. A police team from Batote, led by SHO Inspector Vijay Kotwal, also extended support at the location.

All eight men were brought ashore safely, without any casualties. Authorities, however, have begun an inquiry to determine how the group ended up in the river. Initial suspicion suggests they may have ventured out for timber collection, which is prohibited under District Magistrate’s orders.
Police have cautioned the public against engaging in such dangerous activities, stressing that makeshift rafts on the Chenab pose a grave risk to life. They further warned that if evidence of timber theft or violation of lawful orders emerges, strict legal action will be initiated under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
