Indian Stock Market Today closed due to Dussehra or Vijayadashmi

On this auspicious day of Dussehra or Vijayadashmi, the Indian stock market takes a pause from its daily hustle and remains closed. This respite extends to various segments, including the equity segment, equity derivatives segment, and SLB segment. The currency derivatives market also observes a temporary shutdown. Traders in the commodity derivatives segment and Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) have the day off as well.

Dussehra: Celebrating the Triumph of Good Over Evil

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, signifies the culmination of the nine-day Navratri festival. This day holds immense significance in Hindu mythology as it commemorates the victory of Lord Ram over the demon king Ravana. It’s a day of celebration and reflection on the ultimate triumph of good over evil.

In the financial world, the Indian stock market takes a breather today after a series of tumultuous sessions. In the wake of heightened geopolitical tensions, mixed quarterly earnings reports, and a spike in US treasury yields, the benchmark indices have witnessed a downward trend. On October 23, both the Sensex and Nifty 50 experienced declines exceeding 1%, with the broader markets underperforming the leading indices. Notably, the US 10-year bond yields reached a milestone by touching 5% for the first time since 2007. The Nifty 50 lost 260.90 points, settling at 19,281.75, while the Sensex fell by 825.74 points to close at 64,571.88. This decline brought both indices to their lowest points in nearly two months. The Nifty midcap 100 closed 2.88% lower, and the Nifty smallcap index lost 3.80%.

Upcoming Stock Market Holidays and Muhurat Trading

For those following the stock market’s holiday calendar, the next break after Dussehra will be on November 14, 2023, in celebration of Diwali Balipratipada. Prior to that, Muhurat Trading will be held on November 12, 2023, marking Diwali – Laxmi Pujan. As we approach the year’s end, only three more stock market holidays remain in 2023: Diwali Balipratipada (November 14, 2023), Gurunanak Jayanti (November 27, 2023), and Christmas (December 25, 2023).
