The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that Cyclonic Storm ‘Hamoon’ has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the Northwest Bay of Bengal. According to the IMD, ‘Hamoon’ moved northeastwards with a speed of 18 km per hour during the past 6 hours and intensified into a severe cyclonic storm at 2:30 am on October 24.

The storm is currently located near latitude 19.3°N and longitude 88.4°E, approximately 210 km east-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 270 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal), and 350 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh). It is expected to continue moving north-northeast and is projected to cross the Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Chittagong around noon on October 25 as a Deep Depression.

In response to the approaching cyclonic storm, the Municipal Administration in Odisha had previously placed all Urban Local Bodies (ULB) on alert and issued directives to prepare for potential heavy rainfall, strong winds, and adverse weather conditions.

The intensification of ‘Hamoon’ into a severe cyclonic storm underscores the need for preparedness and precautions in the affected regions. Authorities and local communities are urged to stay informed about the storm’s progress and take necessary measures to ensure safety and mitigate potential damage.
