Chhattisgarh CM Promises Farmers Loan Waiver in Bid for Re-election
In a significant announcement preceding the forthcoming assembly polls in Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, on Monday, pledged that if his party, the Congress, retains power in the state, loans of farmers will be written off. This promise echoes a similar commitment made by the Congress prior to the 2018 assembly polls, which played a pivotal role in the party’s landslide victory, ending the 15-year rule of the BJP.
The Baghel government had previously claimed to fulfill the 2018 promise, successfully waiving agriculture loans amounting to Rs 9,270 crore for 18.82 lakh farmers in the state. Speaking at an event in the Sakti assembly constituency, with only a fortnight left for the first phase of polling, Chief Minister Baghel urged the people to reelect the Congress to power so that the party can once again provide relief to farmers by writing off their loans, as it did after its victory five years ago.
As of now, the opposition BJP has not made any announcements regarding relief measures for farmers, laborers, women, or youths. In contrast, the Congress has already made four significant announcements, including a caste census, procurement of 20 quintals of paddy per acre, housing for 17.5 lakh people, and the latest pledge of a farm loan waiver. Chief Minister Baghel emphasized that there would be more guarantees to come.
He asserted, “Today I want to make an announcement from this stage – farmers’ loans will be waived if you elect the Congress to power again.” In a recent interview with news agency PTI, Baghel underscored the crucial role of farmers in the state’s assembly elections’ outcome, expressing confidence that their support would help the ruling Congress achieve its target of winning 75-plus seats in the 90-member House.
Chhattisgarh is set to hold polling in two phases, on November 7 and 17, signaling the approach of a significant electoral event with substantial implications for the state’s political landscape.
