Union Minister Anurag Thakur has expressed concern over what he sees as efforts to “insult” Sanatan Dharma, a term often used to refer to Hinduism, and criticized opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Uddhav Thackeray, for their silence on the matter.
Political Controversy
These comments come amidst a political controversy sparked by DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, who accused Sanatan Dharma of promoting division and discrimination among people and suggested its eradication. Additionally, DMK leader A Raja compared Sanatan Dharma to diseases like leprosy and HIV, which carry social stigma.
Thakur’s Response
Responding to reporters’ questions about Rahul Gandhi’s statement that he has read Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita and that there is nothing Hindu about what the BJP does, Thakur called on the opposition to speak out against insults to Sanatan Dharma. He claimed that the opposition is engaged in a consistent effort to insult Sanatan Dharma, highlighting their mentality in this regard.
On the India Versus Bharat Debate
Regarding Rahul Gandhi’s comments on the India versus Bharat debate, Thakur dismissed them as an attempt to “spread fear and confusion and tell lies.” He suggested that some individuals have a history of engaging in such behavior.
Uddhav Thackeray’s Comments
Thakur also criticized Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray for his statement suggesting that a “Godhra-like” incident might occur after the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Thakur accused some individuals of compromising their ideology for the sake of power, expressing disappointment that both Rahul Gandhi and Uddhav Thackeray had remained silent when comments critical of Sanatan Dharma were made.
The Godhra Incident
Uddhav Thackeray’s reference to a “Godhra-like” incident pertains to the 2002 Godhra train burning incident in Gujarat, where ‘karsevaks’ returning from Ayodhya were attacked, resulting in several deaths and subsequent riots in the state.
The political discourse surrounding religion and ideology continues to be a contentious issue in India’s diverse and multi-religious society.
