During a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed “strong concerns” about the ongoing “anti-India activities” by extremist elements in Canada.
PM Modi emphasized the need for both countries to collaborate in addressing these threats. He highlighted that India-Canada relations are rooted in shared democratic values, respect for the rule of law, and strong people-to-people ties.
The MEA issued a statement outlining the concerns, which include the promotion of secessionism, incitement of violence against Indian diplomats, damage to diplomatic premises, and threats to the Indian community and their places of worship in Canada.
PM Modi also mentioned the nexus between these extremist forces and organized crime, drug syndicates, and human trafficking, expressing that this should be a concern for Canada as well.
PM Trudeau stated that he had discussions with PM Modi on Khalistan extremism and “foreign interference” and emphasized Canada’s commitment to defending freedom of expression and preventing violence.
Trudeau also paid a visit to Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi during his visit to India. Canada has a significant Indian diaspora, with nearly 1.4 million people of Indian origin living in the country.
