President Rule to End in Jammu and Kashmir After Six Years
Srinagar, October 12, 2024: The Union Government is set to revoke President’s Rule in Jammu and Kashmir before the Omar Abdullah-led government takes oath, marking the end of six years of Central Rule. Officials have confirmed that President Droupadi Murmu will revoke the proclamation issued on October 31, 2019, under Section 73 of the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
This revocation is a necessary step for the elected government to assume office, as the proclamation suspended provisions related to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and the elected government. The Union Cabinet must also approve the revocation.
President’s Rule was initially imposed after Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized into two Union Territories on October 31, 2019, following the collapse of the Mehbooba Mufti-led government in June 2018. Since then, Jammu and Kashmir has been under Central Rule, first under Governor’s Rule for six months and then under President’s Rule, which was extended multiple times with Parliament’s approval.
