Five individuals were arrested on Saturday for allegedly throwing stones at the Durg-Visakhapatnam Vande Bharat Express during its trial run in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district.
The incident took place on Friday night as the train was passing through Bagbahra railway station while returning from Visakhapatnam to Durg.
According to officials, the Vande Bharat Express, which is set to be flagged off for regular service on September 16 from Durg, sustained damage to three of its coaches during the attack.
Windows in coaches C2-10, C4-1, and C9-78 were reportedly shattered by the stone-throwing incident.
The Railway Police Force (RPF) promptly apprehended five individuals in connection with the attack. The suspects, identified as Shiv Kumar Baghel, Devendra Chandrakar, Jeetu Tandi, Lekhraj Sonwani, and Arjun Yadav, were taken into custody.
They are now facing charges under Section 153 of the Railway Act, 1989, which addresses offenses related to endangering the safety of passengers and railway property.
It has been reported by news agency PTI that one of the arrested individuals, Shiv Kumar Baghel, is related to a Congress corporator in Bagbahra, as his sister-in-law holds the position.
The arrested individuals are set to appear in the Raipur Railway Court soon, where they will face trial for their involvement in the incident. Authorities have condemned the attack, stating that such actions jeopardize public safety and will be dealt with severely under the law.
The trial run of the Vande Bharat Express was part of its preparations for the official launch next week.
