India and Malaysia have agreed to enhance cooperation in oil palm cultivation, agriculture, allied products, and digital technology in the plantation sector. Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Malaysia’s Minister of Plantations and Commodities Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani discussed these areas during a meeting in New Delhi.
The Malaysian Minister is visiting India from July 16 to 19. During their meeting at Krishi Bhawan, they explored opportunities to deepen bilateral agricultural cooperation. Both sides expressed a desire to collaborate on the National Mission on Edible Oil–Oil Palm, addressing market access issues related to agriculture and allied products, and institutionalizing cooperation in agriculture. They also discussed the application of digital technology in the plantation sector to improve efficiency and productivity.
The meeting concluded with Union Agriculture Minister Chouhan thanking Minister Johari Abdul Ghani for a productive visit and expressing optimism for continued cooperation in agriculture and other areas. The discussions highlighted the growing engagement between India and Malaysia in various aspects of their bilateral relationship, including political, economic and trade, defense and security, tourism and education, health, human resources, and public administration.
India and Malaysia have signed numerous agreements and Memoranda of Understanding over the years, reflecting a robust and dynamic partnership. Major export items from India to Malaysia include mineral fuels and oils, aluminum and articles thereof, meat and edible meat offal, iron and steel, copper and articles thereof, organic chemicals, nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances, and electrical machinery and equipment.
This meeting marks a significant step toward strengthening agricultural ties and leveraging digital advancements in the plantation sector between the two countries.
