The Taiwan Coast Guard arrested five individuals, including a soldier, on Saturday for allegedly smuggling goods from Kinmen Island to China’s shores. According to Taiwan News, the suspects were apprehended around midnight while transporting electronics, shoes, skincare products, and alcohol.

The Kinmen Islands, located about 10 kilometers from Xiamen city in China, are under close watch due to their strategic location. The Kinmen Defence Command reported that a non-commissioned officer in Taiwan’s Army was involved, using a borrowed fishing boat for the smuggling operation.

Kinmen Army officials have pledged full cooperation with the investigation and promised severe penalties for any military personnel found guilty. “The Army will continue to strengthen education to establish the concept of adherence to the law among officers and soldiers,” they stated.

The Coast Guard identified the suspicious fishing boat ‘Shunfeng 99’ through radar surveillance and seized it in the Tashan waters of Kinmen. During the inspection, patrol officers recovered various items, including electronic supplies, brand-name shoes, and famous wines. The case is currently being handled by Kinmen prosecutors, who have not provided further details due to the ongoing investigation.
