Global Community Must Isolate Nations Harboring Terrorists: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for the global community to isolate and expose nations that harbor terrorists, provide safe havens, and condone terrorism during his speech at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. These remarks were delivered by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at the summit held under Kazakhstan’s Presidency in Astana.
Emphasizing the Principles of SCO
Highlighting the principles of the SCO, PM Modi stressed the importance of mutual respect for sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, equality, mutual benefit, non-interference in internal affairs, and the non-use of force or threat of force as fundamental tenets for the foreign policies of its member states.
“At this time, it is particularly noteworthy that we are reiterating mutual respect for sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, equality, mutual benefit, non-interference in internal affairs, non-use of force or threat of use of force as a basis for our foreign policies. We have also agreed not to take any measures contrary to the principles of state sovereignty and territorial integrity,” stated PM Modi. This reinforcement of principles aims to ensure a unified and consistent approach among SCO member countries.
Combating Terrorism: A Priority for SCO
PM Modi underscored the necessity of prioritizing the fight against terrorism, which he identified as one of the SCO’s original goals. He emphasized that unchecked terrorism poses a significant threat to regional and global peace. “Let us be clear that if left unchecked, it can become a major threat to regional and global peace.
Terrorism in any form or manifestation cannot be justified or condoned,” he asserted. He called for a decisive response to cross-border terrorism and stressed the need to counter terrorism financing and recruitment.
In his call to action, PM Modi urged the international community to take definitive steps to combat terrorism. “While doing so, priority must naturally be given to combating terrorism, one of the original goals of the SCO. Many of us have had our experiences, often originating beyond our borders,” he said. This collective effort is crucial in ensuring that terrorism is effectively addressed and that global peace is maintained.
