At least 14 people have been killed in landslides, floods, and lightning incidents in Nepal over the past 24 hours as the monsoon intensifies across the nation. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRMA) reported that eight people died due to landslides, five from lightning strikes, and one from flooding.
“We recorded a total of 44 incidents on June 26, 2024. In those incidents, 14 people have lost their lives, 8 due to landslides, 5 due to lightning, and 1 due to flooding. Two people are still unaccounted for in the landslide incident, while 10 people have sustained injuries,” said Dijan Bhattarai, spokesperson at NDRMA.
The Home Ministry noted that landslides claimed five lives in Lamjung, two in Kaski, and one in Okhaldhunga on Wednesday alone. Additionally, one death was recorded from flooding.
In the past 17 days since the monsoon began, 28 people have lost their lives due to weather-related incidents. A total of 33 districts have been affected, with 147 incidents recorded. Landslides have been particularly deadly, claiming 14 lives, followed by 13 deaths due to lightning.
Nepal faces high mortality rates from landslides and flooding during the monsoon season, exacerbated by the terrain and unplanned urbanization on landslide-prone slopes. The monsoon typically starts on June 13 and ends on September 23
