On May 25, during the sixth phase of Lok Sabha polling, the Border Security Force (BSF) seized 89 gold biscuits valued at Rs 12 crore at the India-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The operation was conducted by vigilant personnel from the Gunarmath Border outpost, under the South Bengal Frontier.
Acting on a tip-off, BSF jawans cordoned off a house in the border village of Haldarpada. Inside, they found 89 gold biscuits of various sizes, weighing a total of 16.067 kgs. The gold was hidden in a cloth belt inside the house of a smuggler, referred to as Alok Paul (name changed).
According to AK Arya, DIG and spokesperson of South Bengal Frontier, the BSF had received information about a large gold consignment being stored in the house. Upon searching the premises in the presence of village dignitaries, Alok Paul was apprehended with the gold.
During interrogation, Paul revealed that he had been in contact with a Bangladeshi gold smuggler since late March 2024. He agreed to hide the gold for a daily payment of Rs 400. On May 25, Paul received 89 gold biscuits and bricks from the smuggler. He also admitted to having spent a month in jail previously for gold smuggling, with his case still ongoing in Bangaon Court.
The arrested smuggler and the seized gold have been handed over to the Director of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Kolkata for further legal proceedings. This significant bust underscores the ongoing efforts to combat smuggling activities along the India-Bangladesh border.
