Indian Americans Protest Anti-Caste Discrimination Bill in California

Indian Americans Protest Anti-Caste Discrimination Bill in California

In a peaceful protest rally in Sacramento, scores of Indian Americans voiced their opposition to an anti-caste discrimination bill recently passed by the California State Assembly. The protesters urged California Governor Gavin Newsom to veto the bill, which they argue is discriminatory and specifically targets Indians and Hindus.

California Poised to Outlaw Discrimination Based on Caste

The legislation in question aims to amend California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act by adding caste as a protected category under “ancestry.” If signed into law by Governor Newsom, California would become the first U.S. state and the first jurisdiction outside India to outlaw discrimination based on caste.

    Community Rallies Against the Bill

The demonstrators, many of whom had traveled from various parts of the state, gathered in front of the State Capitol in Sacramento. They displayed posters and banners while passionately urging the Governor not to sign the bill into law. Their primary concern is that the legislation would lead to discrimination against the Hindu community and could result in racial profiling.

    Hindu American Foundation Takes Action

The Hindu American Foundation has expressed its intention to explore all available options to protect the rights of Hindu Californians. They are actively considering filing a lawsuit against the bill.

    Background on the Bill

The bill, known as SB403, “Discrimination on the basis of ancestry,” was introduced by Senator Aisha Wahab, the first Muslim and Afghan-American woman elected to the California state legislature, in February. It received overwhelming support in the California Senate, with a vote of 31-5 in favor.

    A Controversial Issue

The bill has sparked controversy and debates within the Indian American community, particularly among those who argue that it does not accurately address the complexities of caste dynamics and may inadvertently harm the very communities it seeks to protect.
