CWC Reiterates Support for Palestinian Rights Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict
In the midst of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the rights of the Palestinian people. The CWC, the top decision-making body of the Indian National Congress, convened for a four-hour meeting and passed a resolution expressing its solidarity with the Palestinian cause. The resolution also called for an immediate ceasefire and emphasized the need for negotiations to address all outstanding issues.
The CWC expressed deep concern and distress over the escalating war in the Middle East, which has claimed the lives of over a thousand people in just two days. The resolution stated, “The CWC reiterates its long-standing support for the rights of the Palestinian people to land, self-government, and to live with dignity and respect.”
This stance comes after the Congress had earlier condemned the attacks on Israel, emphasizing that violence, in any form, does not offer a solution and must cease. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh reiterated the party’s belief that the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people should be realized through dialogue, all while safeguarding the national security interests of Israel.
Mr. Ramesh stressed, “The Indian National Congress condemns the brutal attacks on the people of Israel.” He further reiterated the party’s commitment to peaceful dialogue as the only path to fulfill the Palestinian people’s aspirations for self-respect, equality, and dignity while ensuring Israel’s legitimate national security interests.
The recent conflict saw a surprising and unprecedented attack by Hamas, the governing authority in the Gaza Strip, on southern parts of Israel. This attack resulted in a significant loss of life, with at least 700 people killed and over 2,100 injured in Israel, marking one of the deadliest days for the country in half a century.
Meanwhile, in the Gaza Strip, nearly 500 deaths were reported, along with over 2,000 wounded during Israel’s counterattack. The situation remains dire and continues to be a cause for concern on the international stage.
As the Israel-Hamas conflict rages on, the Congress Working Committee’s resolution underscores the party’s commitment to a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and security of both Palestinians and Israelis.
