Japan Shifts to Hybrid Work as Teleworking Declines Post-Pandemic
Key Highlights:
- Japan sees a decrease in teleworkers as COVID-19 wanes, with more adopting hybrid work.
- The fiscal 2023 survey shows a 2.7 percentage point drop in teleworking compared to the previous year.
- The average frequency of teleworking remains at 2.3 days per week, but there’s a notable increase in those combining office and remote work.
Japan’s approach to work is evolving as the COVID-19 pandemic recedes, with more individuals embracing hybrid work models that blend remote and in-office work, according to a government survey. The fiscal 2023 survey conducted by the transport ministry reveals a decline in teleworkers, with 16.1% of respondents opting for remote work, down 2.7 percentage points from the previous year.
While teleworking surged during the pandemic as a measure to reduce infections, the trend is shifting as restrictions ease. Notably, there’s a rise in individuals combining office attendance with remote work, with more people working remotely one or two days a week compared to previous years.
The survey highlights that bigger cities like Tokyo have higher rates of remote working, with the greater Tokyo area leading at 28%. As Japan navigates the post-pandemic landscape, the adoption of hybrid work models reflects a broader trend towards flexibility and adaptability in the workplace.
