Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a pivotal role in advocating for the inclusion of the African Union in the G20, emphasizing the importance of a more inclusive global dialogue and collaborative efforts for the greater good of the world.

All member nations of the G20 rallied behind Prime Minister Modi’s proposal to grant permanent membership to the African Union, a significant bloc representing the Global South. In response to Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto’s post announcing the African Union’s inclusion in the G20, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the significance of this move, stating, “Indeed, the inclusion of the African Union in the G20 is a significant stride towards a more inclusive global dialogue. We look forward to collaborative efforts that benefit not only our respective continents but also the entire world.” This sentiment emphasizes the G20’s dedication to fostering cooperation on a global scale.

In another social media post, Prime Minister Modi responded to Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, highlighting the pivotal role played by the African Union in global progress. African Union: The Second Permanent Multinational Group in G20

During his inaugural remarks at the G20 Summit, Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), to join other world leaders at the high table of the G20. This historic move makes the African Union the second permanent multinational group in the G20, following the European Union.

The Significance of the African Union

The African Union, headquartered in Addis Ababa, comprises 55 member states representing the entire African continent. Established in 2002 as the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the AU unites nations that collectively boast a GDP of nearly USD 3 trillion and a population of approximately 1.4 billion. This inclusion in the G20 recognizes the African Union’s growing influence and its vital role in shaping global economic policies.
