Pro-Kannada Activists to Block Bengaluru’s National Highway in Cauvery Water Dispute Protest
Pro-Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj has announced that a Pro-Kannada organization will stage a protest by blocking the National Highway near Hoskote toll in Bengaluru to draw attention to the ongoing Cauvery water dispute. The demonstration is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 10, and aims to raise awareness about the contentious issue surrounding the sharing of Cauvery River waters between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Escalating Tensions Over Cauvery Water
The governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have long been embroiled in a dispute over the allocation and sharing of Cauvery River waters. The river plays a vital role in sustaining the livelihoods of people in both states. The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee had recently directed Karnataka to release 3000 cusecs of Cauvery water at Biligundlu from September 28 to October 15, 2023. In response, Karnataka filed a review petition against this order in both the Supreme Court and the Cauvery Water Management Authority.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his dissatisfaction with the committee’s recommendation, stating, “We don’t have water to release to Tamil Nadu,” and confirming that they would challenge the order in the Supreme Court. This ongoing dispute has triggered political turmoil within Karnataka, with former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai accusing the state government of lacking the will to protect the interests of farmers.
It is essential to note that Karnataka had previously cited severe drought conditions in certain parts of the state as the reason for refusing to supply water to Tamil Nadu, a stance that has been met with accusations from the Tamil Nadu government that Karnataka was misleading the nation regarding water supply.
As tensions continue to simmer over the Cauvery water issue, the protest planned by Pro-Kannada activists is expected to bring further attention to the ongoing dispute and its impact on the region.
