Ukraine’s Deputy Intelligence Chief, Vadym Skibitsky, has revealed alarming figures regarding the Russian military presence in areas of Ukraine under its control. Skibitsky stated that more than 420,000 Russian servicemen are concentrated in these temporarily occupied territories, including Crimea. Notably, this number does not include the Russian National Guard and other special units responsible for maintaining occupation authorities in these regions.
Skibitsky also reported a month-long surge in Russian attacks launched from Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. These attacks have been directed at Ukrainian ports, particularly Izmail and Reni, which have served as alternative export hubs, especially since the expiration of a deal safeguarding exports on the Black Sea.
Ukraine initiated a counteroffensive in the eastern and southern regions in June but has encountered stiff resistance from entrenched Russian forces. Furthermore, renewed assaults in the northeast, around Kharkiv, have added to the challenges faced by Ukrainian troops. Deputy Defence Minister Ganna Malyar noted that the Russian forces seem motivated by a desire for revenge in the Kharkiv region and are working to disperse Ukrainian forces in the east to prevent centralization around Bakhmut, where Ukrainian advances have been successful. Malyar acknowledged the strength of the enemy, with more troops and weaponry at their disposal.
In a grim statistic, Malyar also disclosed that the Russian army had fired nearly 400,000 shells at Ukrainian positions on the eastern front over the past week.
