Parents Protest Government Decision on Common Curriculum
Baramulla, Apr 18: Parents of children enrolled in private schools in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district voiced their discontent with the government’s decision to implement a common curriculum across all schools in Kashmir. The protest, held in Sopore town, highlighted concerns over the outdated textbooks prescribed by the JK Board of School Education (BOSE). Parents emphasized that these textbooks had not been updated for years, potentially hindering students’ overall development.
Call for Examination of Textbook Content
Parents referenced the New Education Policy (NEP)-2020, which categorizes students aged three to eight as being in the foundational stage. However, they argued that the textbooks provided by JKBOSE did not meet the standards set by the NEP.”We urge the concerned authorities to thoroughly review the content of these textbooks to ensure that we are laying a strong foundation for our children’s education,” said a group of concerned parents.
The JKBOSE’s mandate for private schools to adopt its prescribed textbooks faced criticism due to the inadequate supply of textbooks in the market. This shortage, coupled with concerns about the quality and content of the books, left many students without necessary materials for their studies.
Concerns Over JKBOSE’s Textbook Quality
Videos circulating on social media highlighted the shortcomings of JKBOSE in crafting textbooks suitable for schoolchildren. These instances raised significant concerns among parents regarding the quality and standards of the books prescribed by the JK Board.
Despite warnings of potential legal action against private schools that do not comply with the government’s order, parents remain steadfast in their demand for a thorough examination and improvement of the textbooks’ content and quality.
