Aditya-L1 Spacecraft Successfully Advances Towards the Sun.
In an exciting development, the Aditya-L1 spacecraft, India’s pioneering solar mission, achieved a significant milestone today as it successfully executed its third earth-bound orbit raising manoeuvre. This remarkable achievement was announced by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in New Delhi. The mission’s progress represents a significant leap forward in our understanding of the Sun and its complex dynamics.
Precision Manoeuvre from ISRO’s ISTRAC Control Center.
This crucial orbit-raising manoeuvre was meticulously coordinated from ISRO’s Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru. The operation also involved ISRO’s ground stations in Mauritius, Bengaluru, and Port Blair, which meticulously tracked the satellite’s movement during this critical phase. The successful execution of this manoeuvre marked a momentous step towards realizing India’s inaugural solar mission’s objectives.
New Orbit and Upcoming Milestones.
Following the flawless execution of the manoeuvre, the Aditya-L1 spacecraft now orbits at an altitude of 296 km x 71767 km. This strategic placement sets the stage for the upcoming manoeuvre scheduled for September 15th around 2 am, as per ISRO’s official statement. The spacecraft, which embarked on its journey on September 2nd from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota, has already completed two crucial earth-bound orbital manoeuvres and is poised for one more before transitioning to the transfer orbit towards the Lagrange point L1. The spacecraft is expected to reach its intended orbit at the L1 point in 125 days.
Unprecedented Sun Observation from L-1 Point.
The Aditya-L1 spacecraft promises groundbreaking insights into the Sun’s behavior. It will observe the Sun from Lagrange point 1, or L-1 point, situated 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. ISRO highlights the advantages of placing a spacecraft in the halo orbit around the L1 point, emphasizing uninterrupted observation of the Sun, free from occultation or eclipses. This continuous observation capability holds tremendous promise for studying solar activities and their real-time impact on space weather.
Mission Objectives and ISRO’s Remarkable Achievements.
The Aditya-L1 mission boasts a comprehensive set of objectives, including studying the physics of solar corona, its heating mechanisms, solar wind dynamics, solar atmosphere coupling, solar wind distribution, temperature anisotropy, and the origin of Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) and flares, among others. This mission’s successful launch onboard the PSLV rocket adds another feather in ISRO’s cap, solidifying its position as one of the world’s leading space agencies.
The Aditya-L1 mission follows closely on the heels of India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission, which made history by successfully soft-landing near the south polar region of the Moon. This achievement catapulted India into the exclusive league of countries capable of achieving such a feat, underscoring ISRO’s remarkable capabilities in space exploration.
