Opposition Allegations of Press Freedom Crackdown

Searches conducted at the residences of journalists linked to the NewsClick website have ignited a political controversy, with numerous Opposition leaders accusing the Narendra Modi government of infringing upon press freedom.

Government’s Response to the Controversy

In response to these allegations, Union Minister Anurag Thakur has firmly stated that there is no “need to justify” the actions taken, emphasizing that probe agencies have the authority to investigate any wrongdoing.

The searches, spanning approximately 20 locations in Delhi-NCR, were carried out in relation to a case filed under the stringent anti-terror legislation, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Sources indicate that the Delhi Police registered the case under the anti-terror law on August 17, shortly after a New York Times investigation raised concerns about the news portal receiving funding from a network associated with Chinese propaganda.

Opposition Leaders Express Concern

Prominent leaders from various Opposition parties have voiced their concerns over the government’s actions. Rajiv Ranjan Singh, the Chief of Janata Dal United (JDU), alleged that these actions were intended to intimidate and create fear. He drew parallels with a previous incident involving the BBC and questioned the government’s commitment to journalistic neutrality.The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), another key Opposition force and ally of the JDU, also criticized the searches. RJD leader Manoj Jha asserted that these actions would be recorded in history and warned that the government would face consequences for such moves.

Press Freedom Concerns Echoed Globally

Many Opposition leaders referred to India’s low ranking on the World Press Freedom Index, published by global media watchdog Reporters Without Borders. This highlighted the international concern regarding the state of press freedom in the country.

Social Media Reactions

Several leaders took to social media to express their opinions. Rajya Sabha MP and Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi, while not explicitly mentioning NewsClick, criticized “Sarkari newstainment journos” for quoting the New York Times. She pointed to the irony in this situation and called for people to Google “NYT + India’s Press Freedom.”

Former Congress leader Kapil Sibal viewed the searches as a “precursor for times to come” and suggested that they might be aimed at silencing dissenting voices ahead of the 2024 elections. The official Congress Twitter handle shared an image reminding the public of India’s ranking of 161 out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom index.

The Press Club of India also expressed its apprehension regarding the raids.
