Saudi Arabia Executes Seven for Terrorism Offences in Single-Day Surge
In a single day, Saudi Arabia executed seven individuals for “terrorism” offences, marking the highest figure since March 2022 when 81 people were put to death. The executions were carried out for convictions related to “creating and financing terrorist organizations and entities,” according to the official Saudi Press Agency, citing the interior ministry. The conservative kingdom has executed 29 people this year, following 170 in 2023, making it one of the world’s most prolific users of capital punishment.
Wave of Condemnation as Saudi Arabia Maintains Stringent Punishments
Saudi Arabia, notorious for its beheadings, faced international condemnation nearly two years ago when 81 individuals were executed in a single day. The recent executions, although not disclosing the nationalities, indicated that the individuals were Saudi citizens. They were convicted of adopting a “terrorist approach” that called for violence, establishing and funding terrorist organizations, and engaging with them to disrupt societal security and stability, endangering national security.
The use of capital punishment in Saudi Arabia has been a longstanding source of concern globally, with human rights advocates frequently calling for reform and reconsideration of stringent punishments. The surge in executions underscores the kingdom’s uncompromising stance on perceived threats to national security through terrorism-related activities.
