EAM Jaishankar Advocates for “Re-Globalisation” and Clarifies India’s Stance
External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar, speaking at an event organized by the Hudson Institute in Washington DC, emphasized the need for some form of “re-globalisation” in the world. He underscored that India is “non-Western and not anti-Western” while discussing India’s role in a changing global landscape.
The Call for Re-Globalisation
Jaishankar pointed out that globalisation is an undeniable force with deep roots that bring significant benefits. However, he acknowledged that the current model of globalisation has evolved over the past 25 years, bringing inherent risks. Addressing these risks and creating a safer world is a critical challenge, according to the minister.
India’s Role in the Indo-Pacific
Turning his attention to the Indo-Pacific, Jaishankar noted that the concept of the Indo-Pacific has gained traction. He highlighted the historical separation of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Region, which was influenced by the Second World War. India’s role in the Pacific order, according to Jaishankar, is essential in addressing global concerns, particularly those related to maintaining stability amid significant changes.
India’s Stance on the West
Jaishankar made it clear that India is not against the West but described India as “non-western and not anti-Western.” He emphasized that India’s position is nuanced and driven by its interests and perspective.
UN Security Council and Russia’s Reorientation
Regarding the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Jaishankar reiterated the need for reform. He emphasized that a UNSC without India, one of the most populous countries and the fifth-largest economy, lacks credibility and effectiveness in the 21st century.
Discussing Russia, Jaishankar observed that Russia’s relationship with the West has deteriorated due to the Ukrainian war. Russia, traditionally seen as a European power, is now turning toward Asia and building stronger ties with Asian countries. Jaishankar predicted that Russia’s focus would shift away from Europe and the United States, potentially embracing Asia and other regions.
Jaishankar’s remarks shed light on India’s perspective on global dynamics and its vision for a more inclusive and stable world .
