
EAM Jaishankar Embraces the Concept of Indo-Pacific
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, in his recent address at the Hudson Institute in Washington DC, emphasized the growing significance of the Indo-Pacific concept. He described it as a notion that has been widely embraced by many countries while being met with some resistance by others. Jaishankar shed light on India’s evolving role in this new Pacific order and highlighted its increasing engagement with nations in the East.
India’s Pivot to the East
Jaishankar pointed out that India now conducts more business to the East of the country than the West. This shift in focus has led to the emergence of the Indo-Pacific concept, which has gained traction globally. He emphasized that India’s contributions to the Indo-Pacific order represent a significant aspect of the ongoing global rebalancing, driven by changes in the capabilities, positioning, and attitudes of the United States. Moreover, he acknowledged that the rise of China and its implications are central to this rebalancing.
India’s Vision for Indo-Pacific
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh echoed the importance of the Indo-Pacific region and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for it. He emphasized that this vision is built on principles of mutual respect, dialogue, cooperation, peace, and prosperity. Singh also commended the success of the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration.
Complex Security Challenges in the Indo-Pacific
Singh highlighted the complex security challenges faced by the Indo-Pacific region, including boundary disputes and piracy. These challenges underscore the region’s increasing geopolitical significance and the need for collaboration among nations to address them effectively.
Bilateral Talks and Global Engagement
Jaishankar’s visit to the United States included meetings with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. These discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations and addressing global issues. The upcoming 2+2 dialogue between India and the U.S. holds promise for further strengthening ties.Jaishankar’s visit also featured participation in a conversation with think tanks about India’s growing role in global transformation. Additionally, he is set to address the 4th World Culture Festival, highlighting India’s cultural contributions on the international stage.
