Morocco Struck by Powerful 6.8-Magnitude Earthquake, Causing Extensive Damage
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences to the people of Morocco after a devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the country, claiming the lives of at least 632 people. PM Modi expressed his sorrow at the loss of lives and offered all possible assistance to Morocco during this challenging time.
PM Modi’s Message of Support
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi stated, “Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the people of Morocco.” He continued, “Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time.”
Devastating Impact of the Earthquake
The powerful earthquake struck Morocco late on a Friday night, causing significant destruction and panic among residents. Many people fled their homes in fear as the earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8, rattled the region. It resulted in damage to buildings and power outages. The quake’s epicenter was located 44 miles (71 kilometers) southwest of Marrakesh, with a depth of 18.5 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey.
History of Earthquakes in North Africa
Earthquakes are relatively rare in North Africa, and this recent earthquake is one of the strongest recorded in Morocco in years. In 1960, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake near Agadir resulted in thousands of deaths. In 2004, another earthquake in Al Hoceima claimed the lives of at least 628 people and left 926 injured. Additionally, neighboring Algeria experienced a devastating 7.3-magnitude earthquake in 1980, known as the El Asnam earthquake, which killed 2,500 people and displaced at least 300,000 individuals, making it one of the largest and most destructive earthquakes in recent history.
As Morocco copes with the aftermath of this tragic earthquake, international support and assistance are crucial in providing relief and aid to the affected regions.
