Rohit Pawar Alleges Political Motive in ED Inquiry
Following his appearance before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged money laundering case, NCP leader Rohit Pawar, the grandnephew of party supremo Sharad Pawar, raised concerns over the timing of the inquiry. Expressing his suspicions of a political motive, Pawar alleged a pattern of selectively targeting opposition leaders with probes as elections draw near. He emphasized, “The probe is happening against only opposition leaders.”
Concerns Over Probe Timing
Rohit Pawar, who was summoned by the ED in connection with the Maharashtra State Cooperative (MSC) Bank scam case, voiced his apprehensions about the political backdrop surrounding the inquiry. He stated that the ED sought information on February 8 and hinted at a potential summons on February 12 or 13. Pawar asserted that the investigations are strategically timed due to the upcoming elections.
Protest at NCP Headquarters
NCP supporters staged a hunger strike demonstration outside the party’s headquarters in Mumbai, expressing their opposition to the investigations conducted by the central agency. This protest reflects the growing discontent among NCP followers regarding the perceived targeting of their leaders.
MSC Bank Scam and Legal Proceedings
The alleged MSC Bank scam involving fraudulent disbursal of loans amounting to ₹25,000 crores triggered legal actions, including a PIL filed in the Bombay High Court. The PIL highlighted the purported modus operandi of the fraud, accusing some sugar mills of defaulting on loans. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) initially investigated the case, leading to the filing of a closure report in 2020. However, the ED intervened against the closure report, initiating its own investigation into the matter.
