Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP of Using ED for Political Imprisonment

A day following the arrest of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took a strong stand, alleging that the BJP is orchestrating the imprisonment of opposition leaders to secure an advantage in the upcoming general elections. Speaking at a public distribution programme in Nadia district, Banerjee asserted that even if she were incarcerated, she would emerge stronger, emphasizing that the BJP is resorting to imprisonments as an electoral strategy.

BJP’s Threats on NRC and Mamata’s Firm Stance

Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the BJP, accusing them of attempting to impose the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and refuting their claims about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). She vowed not to allow the implementation of the NRC and criticized the BJP’s alleged divisive tactics. The Trinamool chief revealed her party’s eagerness for an alliance with the Congress for the state’s Lok Sabha elections, highlighting that the Congress rejected the proposal, leading to her decision to go solo. Banerjee expressed confidence in defeating the BJP in the elections and indicated a post-election collaboration with regional parties to form the government at the Centre.

Mamata Banerjee’s Political Moves and Challenges to BJP

Banerjee hinted at fielding party leader Mahua Moitra in the upcoming general elections, emphasizing her commitment to representing the common people. She cautioned locals against accepting identity cards issued by the Border Security Force (BSF) in border areas, urging the BSF to focus on border management. Banerjee accused the Centre of withholding funds due to the state, announcing a 48-hour dharna in Kolkata starting Friday to protest the delay in fund disbursement, with a commitment to continue until the dues are settled.
