Chandigarh Set for Mayoral Elections Following High Court Ruling
In response to recent Punjab and Haryana High Court rulings, the Chandigarh administration issued a notification scheduling mayoral polls for January 30, 2024. The election meeting, directed by UT Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh, will convene at 10 am in the Assembly Hall of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. The High Court set aside an earlier order by the Chandigarh administration deferring the polls. The notification designates Vinay Pratap Singh as the “Prescribed Authority” for conducting the elections in adherence to Section 38 of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976.
Court Directives Overrule Administration’s Deferred Polls
The Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the Chandigarh Administration to conduct mayoral, senior deputy mayor, and deputy mayor elections on January 30, overturning the administration’s decision to postpone the polls from January 18 to February 6. The court emphasized the importance of Section 38 of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976. The Divisional Commissioner, acting as the Prescribed Authority, is responsible for convening the election meeting. The court instructed the Chandigarh police to ensure a peaceful election process without disturbances around the Municipal Corporation Office.
AAP and Congress Alliance Braces for Mayoral Contest
AAP councillor Kuldeep Kumar petitioned the High Court, challenging the administration’s order to reschedule mayoral elections. The court’s ruling aligns with the demand for fair and transparent elections, emphasizing the urgency to prevent horse-trading and ensure adherence to principles of free and fair elections. The AAP and Congress alliance is gearing up for the mayoral contest, with AAP focusing on the mayoral seat, while Congress candidates compete for the positions of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.
