Russian Court Fines Apple for Hosting ‘Mein Kampf’ on Apple Books
A Russian court has levied a fine of 800,000 rubles (approximately $8,915 or Rs 7.41 lakh) against Apple for its refusal to remove Adolf Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf’ from the Apple Books application. Despite the distribution of ‘Mein Kampf’ being outlawed in Russia since 2010, Apple Books continued to provide access to the controversial book, leading to legal consequences.
Closed-Door Hearing and Trade Secrets Concerns
The fine was imposed after a closed-door hearing at the Tagansky District Court of Moscow. Apple had sought a private hearing to protect trade secrets, according to the Russian news agency TASS. The court found Apple Distribution International guilty of an offense under Russian administrative law and imposed a penalty of 800,000 rubles for failing to delete restricted information as required by Russian legislation.
Repeat Offender: Apple’s Previous Fines in Russia
This is not the first time Apple has faced fines in Russia. In a separate incident, the tech giant paid an antitrust fine of 1.2 billion rubles ($13.4 million) for compelling Russian iOS application developers to use Apple’s payment instrument. Another fine of 400,000 rubles ($4,466) was imposed in August 2023 for Apple’s refusal to remove false information about the Russia-Ukraine war from two podcast websites. The recurring fines indicate the challenges Apple encounters in navigating Russian regulations and policies.
The legal actions against Apple in Russia underscore the complex landscape for multinational tech companies operating in the country, with potential ramifications for content and app store policies.
