Russia Criticizes NATO’s Large-Scale Exercise, Sees Return to Cold War Dynamics
Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Alexander Grushko, criticized NATO’s largest exercise since the Cold War, involving around 90,000 troops. Grushko, speaking to the state RIA news agency, characterized the exercise as part of the “hybrid war” unleashed by the West against Russia. He claimed that the scale of the exercise signifies the “final and irrevocable return of NATO to the Cold War schemes,” emphasizing the preparation for confrontation with Russia in terms of military planning, resources, and infrastructure.
NATO’s Exercise and Russia’s Perspective
NATO recently announced its significant exercise, focused on rehearsing how U.S. troops could reinforce European allies in countries bordering Russia and on the alliance’s eastern flank in the event of a conflict with a “near-peer” adversary. While NATO did not explicitly mention Russia, its top strategic document identifies Russia as the most significant and direct threat to the security of NATO members.
Background on Russia-Ukraine Relations
The tensions between Russia and NATO come against the backdrop of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which Kyiv and its Western allies have labeled as an unprovoked imperialistic land grab. Moscow has consistently accused the “collective West” of conducting a “hybrid war” against Russia, particularly by supporting Ukraine through financial and military aid.
