IMD Launches Panchayat-Level Weather Forecasts in 12 Indian Languages

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) marked its 150th year by launching panchayat-level weather forecasts in 12 Indian languages, including Odia, to provide direct weather information to farmers in every gram panchayat. The celebration of IMD’s 150th year extends from January 15, 2024, to January 15, 2025.

IMD Scientist Sanjeeb Dwivedi highlighted the significant expansion in coverage, emphasizing that the weather office aims to provide forecasts at the panchayat level. The initiative, named ‘Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam,’ was introduced as part of the 150th-anniversary celebrations.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar praised IMD for issuing timely forecasts that have helped save lives during events like cyclones. He emphasized that IMD’s impact extends beyond borders, with neighboring countries relying on its expertise. Dhankhar acknowledged the role of IMD in touching every aspect of life, from agriculture and healthcare to aviation and energy, acting as a safety net for national interests and citizens.

The IMD, as the principal government agency in meteorology and related subjects, plays a crucial role in providing vital information and safeguarding the nation against the impact of natural events.
