The airport in Agatti island, Lakshadweep, recorded the lowest number of flights in eight years during the April-November 2023 period, with 1,080 aircraft movements compared to 1,482 in the same period in 2022. The archipelago garnered renewed interest after PM Modi’s recent visit, but limited connectivity, lack of hotels, and tourist facilities pose challenges for tourism. Industry executives highlight the need for direct air connectivity, improved infrastructure, and promotion to enhance Lakshadweep’s appeal as a tourist destination. The government plans to develop a new airport at Minicoy island to boost tourism and surveillance capabilities.
