SC Directs Lawyer to Tender Unconditional Apology for Contemptuous Allegations
The Supreme Court has instructed a lawyer, sentenced to six months imprisonment for criminal contempt, to tender an unconditional apology to the judges he targeted. The Delhi High Court had found the lawyer guilty of making “scandalous, unwarranted, and baseless imputations” against sitting judges. The high court had sentenced him to six months in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000. The Supreme Court directed the lawyer to file an unconditional apology on affidavit before the concerned judges and scheduled the matter for further hearing on January 16.
The high court had observed that the lawyer, despite being given an opportunity to apologize, stood by his allegations. The Supreme Court emphasized the need for the petitioner to file an apology and directed the police authorities to arrange for his in-person appearance before each judge against whom he made the allegations. The case underscores the judiciary’s commitment to maintaining decorum and addressing contemptuous behavior in legal proceedings.
