India Aims to Lead Global Lentil Production with Anticipated Surge
India is set to become the global leader in lentil production, with an expected increase in masur (lentil) output for the 2023-24 crop year. Projections indicate approximately 16 lakh tonnes, surpassing other major producers like Canada and Australia. This surge is attributed to expanded masur cultivation, reflecting a strategic shift in agricultural priorities.
Surpassing Previous Records
The forecasted production signals a significant rise since the 2017-18 crop year when over 16 lakh tonnes were produced. This optimistic outlook, affirmed by Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh, positions India at the forefront of global lentil production, marking a departure from the 15 lakh tonnes produced in the 2022-23 crop year.
Toward Self-Sufficiency
The surge aligns with India’s broader goal of achieving self-sufficiency in pulses by 2027. While acknowledging the need for interim imports, the Pulses24 Convention, organized by the Global Pulse Confederation and Nafed, seeks to attract global stakeholders and promote best practices in pulse production. The convention aims to double pulse consumption by 2028 from 2023 levels, with global output at around 60 million tonnes.
Empowering Farmers and Boosting Domestic Production
Strategic initiatives, including an increased Minimum Support Price (MSP) for masur, have energized farmers, contributing to expanded lentil acreage. The recently launched tur procurement portal, noted by NAFED Managing Director Ritesh Chauhan, reflects positive responses, highlighting India’s efforts to enhance domestic pulse production. This transformative shift positions India as a key player in global pulse production.
