Customs department officials at Cochin International Airport intercepted a passenger arriving from Kuwait and seized 677.200 grams of foreign-origin gold on Thursday. Profiling-based scrutiny led officers to the passenger, who arrived on flight 6E 1238. During the inspection of his checked-in baggage, gold in coiled form, weighing 498.50 grams, was found concealed within 8 LED bulbs and 4 LED lamps. The personal search of the passenger led to the discovery of additional concealed gold—a 24K gold chain (149.90 grams) and two 22K gold jewelry pieces (28.80 grams) hidden in the innerwear.

The total seized gold is estimated to be worth Rs 38.17 lakh. Further investigations are underway to unveil additional details about the smuggling operation. The customs department’s vigilance and profiling measures contributed to the successful interception and prevention of illegal gold smuggling.
