Supreme Court-Conditionally Suspended Conviction Revokes Disqualification of BSP Leader in Lok Sabha
The Lok Sabha Secretariat has revoked the disqualification of BSP leader Afzal Ansari as a member of the Lower House after the Supreme Court conditionally suspended his conviction in a Gangsters Act case. Although his status as a lawmaker has been restored, his rights are curtailed. Ansari won’t attend the forthcoming Budget Session of Parliament, and he is prohibited from participating in House proceedings, voting, or receiving perks or monetary benefits. The Supreme Court suspended Ansari’s conviction in December 2023, subject to conditions. The decision ensures the Ghazipur parliamentary constituency isn’t notified for a by-election until the high court decides Ansari’s appeal against his conviction.
Lok Sabha Revokes Afzal Ansari’s Disqualification Following Supreme Court’s Conditional Suspension of Conviction
The Lok Sabha Secretariat has lifted the disqualification of BSP leader Afzal Ansari as a member of the Lower House after the Supreme Court conditionally suspended his conviction in a Gangsters Act case. Ansari’s restoration as a lawmaker comes with restrictions—he won’t participate in the forthcoming Budget Session of Parliament and is barred from engaging in House proceedings, casting votes, or receiving perks or monetary benefits. The Supreme Court’s December 2023 decision suspended Ansari’s conviction, contingent on specific conditions. This move prevents the Ghazipur parliamentary constituency from undergoing a by-election until the high court adjudicates Ansari’s appeal against his conviction.
